the road to lassen peak
Late June, and Lassen National Park is still mostly under snow. Just the day we arrived, road crews had just punched through
the last stretch of unplowed main road that runs North and South through the park. That center stretch was open to hikers and bicyclists
but not yet vehicles. We could drive as far as Lassen peak, which we did. And snow there was...

The snow wall all around this rest area was a good 14 feet high.

The pit toilet buildings were still half embedded in the snowbank, and carried 7 feet of snow on their roofs.

It was colder in this corner of the parking lot because of the closed-in snow wall, but generally the temperature was mid-70's.
Kids in shorts and t-shirts were sledding.

Mount Lassen. Still considered an active volcano, part of an entire range of active volcanoes (including Rainier, Shasta, St. Helens,
and of course, almost all of Yellowstone Park), all part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Mother Earth isn't finished yet...
